Overview

Soil & Gravel Testing

The performance of every road, platform and foundation starts with the material beneath it. Soil and gravel testing tells you how a material will behave — its strength, plasticity, compaction characteristics and bearing capacity — before it costs you on site.

Letaba Lab carries out the full suite of indicator and foundation tests: grading, Atterberg limits, moisture/density relationships (Proctor), CBR and in-situ DCP surveys. Results are produced under SANAS ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation to recognised national standards.

Our field teams sample and test on-site, and we can establish a site laboratory for large earthworks and roads programmes anywhere in Southern Africa.

Benefits

Why clients choose Letaba Lab for this

Reduce foundation risk

Know a material's strength and behaviour before it is placed, not after a failure.

Tested to national standards

Indicator, compaction and CBR testing to TMH1 and SANS methods under accreditation.

Field & on-site testing

DCP surveys and field density testing, with site laboratories for major programmes.

Our process

From sample to signed-off results

A clear, accredited workflow that keeps your programme moving.

1

Sampling

Representative samples are taken on-site to national standards, or DCP surveys run in the field.

2

Preparation

Samples are prepared and conditioned in the laboratory ready for testing.

3

Accredited testing

Indicator, compaction and CBR tests are run under ISO/IEC 17025 methods.

4

Reporting

Clear, certified results with the parameters your designer and client need.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Which indicator tests do you offer?
We carry out the full foundation indicator suite — grading, Atterberg limits (liquid limit, plasticity index, linear shrinkage) — plus compaction and CBR.
What is a DCP survey used for?
The Dynamic Cone Penetrometer measures in-situ strength of pavement and subgrade layers quickly and non-destructively, ideal for assessing existing roads and platforms.
Do you offer field density testing?
Yes. We carry out field density and compaction control on-site so you can confirm layers are compacted to specification as work proceeds.
Can you set up a laboratory on our site?
Yes. For large roads and earthworks programmes we establish and operate fully functional site laboratories across Southern Africa.
Is the testing accredited?
Yes — Letaba Lab is SANAS ISO/IEC 17025:2017 accredited. Confirm the accredited scope for your branch when you request a quote.
